Scott Adams’s Bil Keane Epiphany and My Problem With Shrinks (An Essay)

In one of his recent videos, Scott Adams of Dilbert fame recounted an interesting episode from his career. He had had an epiphany. Delivered courtesy of one Bil Keane of Family Circus fame.

The revelation was that Scott was a cartoonist’s cartoonist. Meaning that he made cartoons that only other cartoonists would enjoy.

After some difficulty in digesting this truth Adams credits the nourishment he derived therefrom as integral to his success. Citing that his audience had often requested Dilbert spend more time in the office. Adams was loathe to humor this request given he’d been using Dilbert as an escape from his own cubicle farm. But, post epiphany he began to cater more to the audience than his personal tastes.

The takeaway seems to have been that a serious artist creates work for other people.

I disagree.

First, there is the question of selection. Adams appears to have unwittingly been making a niche cartoon. There are artists who are aware they are making a niche product. Their decision to do so does not of necessity imply self-service.

Whether or not this implication was a goal or aftereffect of Adams’s assertion is irrelevant. Since it falls into the cooky cutter trend of boilerplate advice for creatives that have littered store shelves since Boomers first began navel-gazing.

I call this boilerplate because writing with an audience in mind is as English 101 as it gets. Hell, it’s elementary.

It’s certainly true that this isn’t necessarily easily achieved and helpful prodding from the ‘greats’ likely helps things along. However, that does not change the fact that this is boilerplate.

And not good boilerplate mind you.

Every member of a given audience changes with time. An audience is not a monolith. Believing you understand their egos, their psyches, and their desires is far more egotistical than making a self-serving doodle.

It annoys me in the same way as the suggestion that using a third person voice somehow makes your writing more objective. As if one gained objectivity by pretending to be a disembodied being of no ego hovering wraithlike over eternity.

Mystics always want to escape the ego so bad they run right into it.

Furthermore, the idea that commercial success and broad appeal are indicative of the quality of a work is so readily dismissible that I will not insult you by describing how.

To be fair this is likely not at all what Adams meant but it can, and I believe will be inferred, by a good deal of people (my ex comes to mind). While it is certainly not Adams responsibility to preemptively perry every daft inference that’s made from his observations; it is my ardent joy to point out the daftness.

Yes, I will concede that solipsism is an ailment all too common among creatives. Putting Dilbert in the office was a good idea.

But, solipsism also occurs in macro-organisms. Remember when Dylan went electric?

There is no wisdom in crowds since crowds are made of individuals who understand very little about themselves.

To suggest otherwise is to utter vapid truisms like some kind of hysterical desert seer.

Yes, there is a brilliance and craft in making the profound accessible to the masses (whatever those are) and escaping one’s personal caprice that every artist should practice.

No, the pursuit of this does not make you a more serious artist or a better artist. This is because there is a distinction between may and will.

Trying to squeeze the unique mixture of information and reactions that is your art into a popular mold will not necessarily make it more palatable.

So, as regards the balance between audience and performer:

Let’s not run into the arms of one solipsism to escape the other.

While there is a large deal of sport and fun in this little essay for myself. I do have motivations that extend beyond knocking down the shibboleth of ‘creativity guides.’

Adams seems to have the same sort of problem that Tim Pool and Jordan Peterson do. That is he’s a shrink.

What bothers me about shrinks is that they believe they think in third person.

Which is what allows and motivates them to delight in ‘telling hard truths.’

These truths often being observations we’ve all already assimilated, digested, and fertilized our garden with.

There is also a belief among these sorts in their own powers. One that is nearly mystical in nature.

Tim Pool calls his ‘social engineering,’ Adams is a hypnotist, and Peterson fancies himself an adept diagnostician for problems that have eluded the greatest thinkers for eternity.

But this is all just a fancy way of saying shrinks annoy me – hence this essay.

Despite these points of contention, I value the contributions and insights of all three men.

Thanks for reading.

More Bad Times Ahead?

Path-Dependent Development of Mass Housing in Moscow, Russia ...

One event that has sustained emotional resonance is that evening on the outskirts of Moscow. I was a kid of six or so. It was 1995ish and my mother and I were ferried to some bestial monument to Brutalism in a creme colored Soviet Era drandulet.

As we approached the long low apartment complex shrouded in trees and twilight I noted an eerie passage to some inky basement.

My mother mentioned something about the spirit of death lingering there. And we scurried past the monstrosity into a green tinted hallway and up a flight of stairs.

At the time I was often surprised that not evervyone lived eleven stories high.

We’d arrived for tea. As with all such memories of early life I can’t for the life of me recall if we were the guests of friends or family.

Anyhow the sixtyish woman and her husband were hospitable as all great Russians are. Offering the best of a meager stock of crackers and aromatic Chai.

Though the reminiseces the adults had seemed pleasant there was notheless a certain pensiveness. And then the conversation turned to hunger.

So, I suppose my mother was right. The spirit of death did linger there.

It was the spectre of famine, the monster of want.

Though he was gone he lingered.

Here some twenty five years later in the post industrial land of endless buffets such a beast seems less likely than unicorns.

But, perhaps this is an illusion.

As I said, the emotional resonance of that night, the tension in the air, has been sustained throughout my life.

So, I am keenly aware of the precarious balance of agriculture and transport that makes our plenty so commonplace.

Unfortunately, this balance may be skewing towards a dangerous direction.

Alarm is the enemy of wisdom.

But, when Tyson big wigs warn of food shortages, eyebrows should be raised.

Yes, of course there is corporate interest there in spinning things towards favorable legislation but that doesn’t change the fact that our infrastructure is a miracle hanging on a thread.

Here is Ron Paul’s excellent video on this troubling development:

TFS 39 – American Single Malts, Magic Evenings, and Exoplanets

Today I discuss the wonders of night-time cycling, whiskey, and space.

Here are the articles I read from:

http://whiskyadvocate.com/american-malt-whiskey/

https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2020/04/newly-found-exoplanet-may-be-the-most-similar-to-earth/

While I did fix the audio problem…(it’s now in stereo)

I still dunno why I can’t get Premiere to export my pictures in the original resolution:

20200417_222930

Yes, I read from a script today for the most part. I’m a bit too tired these days to do unscripted stuff all of the time.

Here it is for those who’d prefer to read:

Yes, that’s wonderful. Took a ride round town come evening time. There is something magical in these cool Carolina nights.

I must remark on the immense psychological benefit of exposure. How essential it is to appreciating the comforts of hearth and home.

With all the wonderful amenities that modern living provides us indoors venturing out is sometimes difficult. Sucking you in like a well worn couch.

A couch whose magic is both created and ruined by overuse.

That’s why tonight’s little expedition was so exhilarating. The exercise, and the mild thrill of the dark corners of that one wooded dirt road in the back of a neighborhood that I used to live in, these provided the contrast to the fiery comfort of Scotch and high speed internet that I so desperately needed.

I really think there is a deeper phenomenon here than suburban malaise. I think that a lot of our modern psychological problems can be attributed to our ignoring the ancient need to range.

So, I’ve replenished my whiskey till next weekend rolls around. This time instead of the Founder’s Reserve I have the Glenlivet 12 which is aged in double oak barrels. The clerk that sold it to me also recommended an American single malt from Virginia but it was about 70 dollars for 750 mL if I recall correctly. Too much for my purse.

Also, I am a bit suspicious of any sort of American brewing or distilling. While there are lots of great American whiskeys and beers there’s a corner cutting in production that I’m not a fan of. Traditions like Reinheitsgebot help to curb US style capitalistic exuberance in Europe.

I’m not sure if the whiskey the clerk recommended is guilty of anything that I found in the article I’m about to read from but the general information does confirm the wisdom of my snobbery.

From whiskyadvocate.com:

“In Scotland, malt whisky is always made using 100% malted barley. In the U.S. many malt whiskeys (especially those labeled “single malt”) are made with 100% malted barley as well. But they don’t have to be: U.S. regulations stipulate that malt whiskey is only required to have a minimum of 51% malted barley in the mashbill.

Like bourbon and rye, the maximum proofs for distillation and barrel entry for American malt whiskey are 160 and 125, respectively. Additionally, it must be stored in new, charred oak barrels. Therefore, American malt whiskeys are closer kissing cousins to bourbon and American rye than they are to scotch single malts.”

I’ve only recently begun my whisky journey and will update everybody on my findings as I progress. Corrections and suggestions are encouraged.

Now back to waxing poetic about the merits of Carolina evenings. One thing that I found particularly catalytic for stirring vague sentiments of an eternal tapestry is being in places at the same time of day as I was when I had formative or otherwise grand experiences.

A relationship some half decade distant now had found me in an old style home with a lover, an old style home which was very reminiscent of the sort I dwelt in when I first came to the States, an old style home whose small but cozy glowing interior mixed so tidily with the night outside the kitchen door.

There were cigarettes and gin and the sense that I was stringing along some kind of coherency in these old dwellings. That dirty blond hair with just a hint of reddish hue was such a vibrant thing. So full of fresg life among this venerable bit of American.

She did say a lot of stupid shit though.

Let’s turn to less local affairs and read about a newly found exoplanet.

This article is from mysteriousuniverse.org, and is written by Jocelyn LeBlanc, let’s begin…

UPS Dirt Shirt, Muscovite Immunity, and the dangers of Suburbia

I’m marinating in grime from around the world every workday and they think giving me a surgical mask is gonna help.

What probably helps more than anything is the fact that I swam in rivers that glowed green Fallout style as kid in 90’s Moscow.

This suburban denial of death and risk is deadlier than any pathogen.

Obviously this vid is a goof but I do mean what I said about the pearl clutching and ineffective, livelihood ruining, token gestrues.

Ugh, it’s gonna be another chore laden day. While, I really think homeownership is one of the keys to liberty it’s also a huge pain in the ass. Especially as concerns labyrinthine beauracratic horrors associated therewith.

To Mask or Not to Mask?

The CDC has gone schizo and now I’m wearing a surgical petri dish on my facehole.

Here’s an article on the mask debate: https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/04/coronavirus-pandemic-airborne-go-outside-masks/609235/

First, the CDC said save masks for medical personel then on April 3rd Trump wanted us to gimp up Bane style.

There’s a lot to unpack here, and this video isn’t going to do that. This is just a breif ramble on some stuff I learned and the shittiness of this late stage policy and my flimsy ass surgical mask.

It’s goofy out there and I’m gardening partially because it rocks and partially because it’s the perfect activity for getting vitamin D, and taking the edge off, all while growing freakin food.
