I continue the discussion of civilizational decline. With an examination of the difference between principle and allegiance and what this means for the rule of law.

One event that has sustained emotional resonance is that evening on the outskirts of Moscow. I was a kid of six or so. It was 1995ish and my mother and I were ferried to some bestial monument to Brutalism in a creme colored Soviet Era drandulet.
As we approached the long low apartment complex shrouded in trees and twilight I noted an eerie passage to some inky basement.
My mother mentioned something about the spirit of death lingering there. And we scurried past the monstrosity into a green tinted hallway and up a flight of stairs.
At the time I was often surprised that not evervyone lived eleven stories high.
We’d arrived for tea. As with all such memories of early life I can’t for the life of me recall if we were the guests of friends or family.
Anyhow the sixtyish woman and her husband were hospitable as all great Russians are. Offering the best of a meager stock of crackers and aromatic Chai.
Though the reminiseces the adults had seemed pleasant there was notheless a certain pensiveness. And then the conversation turned to hunger.
So, I suppose my mother was right. The spirit of death did linger there.
It was the spectre of famine, the monster of want.
Though he was gone he lingered.
Here some twenty five years later in the post industrial land of endless buffets such a beast seems less likely than unicorns.
But, perhaps this is an illusion.
As I said, the emotional resonance of that night, the tension in the air, has been sustained throughout my life.
So, I am keenly aware of the precarious balance of agriculture and transport that makes our plenty so commonplace.
Unfortunately, this balance may be skewing towards a dangerous direction.
Alarm is the enemy of wisdom.
But, when Tyson big wigs warn of food shortages, eyebrows should be raised.
Yes, of course there is corporate interest there in spinning things towards favorable legislation but that doesn’t change the fact that our infrastructure is a miracle hanging on a thread.
Here is Ron Paul’s excellent video on this troubling development:

Panic is more dangerous than germs. I make the case for getting a few extra groceries. Worst case scenario you have a slightly fuller pantry.
No this is not a recanting of my initial observation that this virus while concerning isn’t apocalyptic.
This is a supply line problem. And boy do we have a big one. We are insanely dependent on China for goods essential to manufacturing, medicine, hell goods in general.
The United States and all nations would do well to secure as much self sufficiency as possible. Distribution of goods over wide distances is a tricky, expensive, and highly sensitive business.
Let’s not make it our primary means of sustenance!
Some people have been critical of Tim for “shilling.” Personally, I have nothign against people offering solutions to potential problems. I think that the beans and rice package the pariot supply has is pretty affordable and a sound idea.
Though, you’d also do well to stock up on nutritionally dense canned stuff like herring, etc.

I lug boxes for a living. Sometimes I run out of healthy stuff so I opt for hearty.
Base – Red Baron Deluxe Supreme
Garnish – Nacho Cheese and a metric ton of Ground Beef
I work in the hub but sometimes do driver help. Like I did a couple of days ago. I saw purple while recovering at a diner on the second day. Granted I worked since four AM and my own car doesn’t have air con but still: neither the hub where I work nor the trucks have air conditioning. And Friday in my area had a heat index of 105 degrees Farenheit according to what my driver said.
The lady from the video has created a petition to put air conditioning in the trucks.
And, while I’m not sure that air con is workable without a new fleet please sign the petition to help press for change.
Just a fun little motivational video with some basic filling cooking ideas that won’t break the bank. Aimed at helping those who need to invest a good part of a limited budget on business or artsy fartsy needs. Though pretty much anybody could benefit.
Well… washing the potatoes was like three minutes, peeling five, and baking them twenty. But you can just chillax while they bake and then the fish, peppers, mushrooms, vinegar, goat cheese, and mayo thing takes like twenty tops. So altogether it’s a tad over an hour but that’s only technically.
The whole point of this is that it’s not that tough to eat healthy, affordable, tasty stuff. Even for someone who’d prefer to continue napping.
I plan on doing more ‘hipster home ec’ type essays, vlogs, etc. as I discover how to eat well as a Frugal McDougal.
