‘Golden Hostage’ @ GROW – 7.19.24

Ambient, electronic, and experimental ‘Golden Hostage’ is a rare audio treat.

My good friend Nikoli who is often featured on this channel playing a variety of instruments performed this set with Golden Hostage at GROW.

Golden Hostage is a South Carolina based project by artist and musician Adam Drawdy.

TFS 52 – Wealth vs Bling

The guy with the shitty 2006 Chrysler is wealthier than Mustang Mama. An examination of the dumb limbic monkey-shit I see daily on the road. Tied pretty tidily to broader points about societal decay made by Peter Hitchens.

TFS 22 – Coronavirus, Kvass, and Carolina Living

Note (I repeated a factoid from another YouTuber (CoffeeTalk) “bird flu has 98% or so survival rate) I was unable to confirm this via Google. All I got was survival rate of the virus strains in Korea not of people. I did find a sixty percent mortality rate. That being said I don’t think he’s entirely off the mark because the CDC said the following:
While the risk from Asian H5N1 is low to most people, CDC recommends general precautions.
Sporadic human infections with Asian H5N1 virus have occurred in other countries, primarily in Asia and Africa. Most human infections with Asian H5N1 viruses in other countries have occurred after prolonged and close contact with infected sick or dead birds.
No animal or human infections with Asian H5N1 virus have occurred in the United States.

Video is about Coronavirus news, media coverage, Kvass and beer, Russian memories, and the economy.

(I’m aware the audio doesn’t match. Sorry, I had no time to fix it.)

Small southern towns that bake beneath a low hanging sun. If you’ve seen them all then you haven’t seen any.

Did you ever sit under Magnolia blossoms, next to a jar of crickets, as your friend’s sister twirled on a tireswing. A tireswing that was just ten minutes walk from a swimming hole?

No, I’m not trying to sell you chewing tobacco or homemade jam.

I’m just wondering if these places are going to stay.

They were sort of our version of indigenous tribes deep in the Amazon. All sleepy in a blanket of humidity and cicada song. As primordial as discarded peach pits that take root.

Do you remember battered banisters, and the highest technology being a superninendo; that you soon abandoned to slide in your socks across a musty woodpanel floor? You know the sort of stuff you’d do as an ancient Sharpee named Midnight watched lazily from his post beneath a shuttered window.

If you don’t I guess it doesn’t much matter.

Cause every sacred rite of passage that a barefoot, cricket hunting, Red Ryder marksman fell into, climbed over, or set on fire is now forever bathed in the witching glow of LCD.

Unfortunately that’s not an illicit substance that will get you closer to nature. It’s mighty uncanny. This disembodied voice that colors every living moment in artificial omniscience.

The oaks are still majestic at the periphery of the pasture. The earth smells sweet. But there’s a tension even here.

The question is am I old. Or are we mad?

The Good Times get Better – Local Eats – Julia’s German Stammtisch

Hungry?

Those unfamiliar with the Journal may wonder why a Russian with a Scottish surname has such a weird kink for Germany. Well, there’s Bach..and then there’s Schnitzel…!

20181210_124933
Jaeger Schnitzel which moments from this photo was garnished with cheese, red cabbage, and Sauerkraut. Great way to recover from a 2 am shift! Perhaps the best.

A good friend  of mine finally reopened the Stammtisch he owns and operates with his mother. It has been around for thirty years if not more. I don’t have a picture of its first iteration but here is the second…with which I am most familiar:

Photo of Julia's German Stammtisch - Columbia, SC, United States. A look from a small table near the bar

It was basically a converted trainstation or motel right behind a newly built strip mall featuring giants like Whole Foods and other yuppie delights. Considering this I’d definitely call it  a hidden gem. Very Gemütlichkeit!

I’ve helped out at the place before and loved it well…so it’s sad that the location and memories are now just history. But not too sad considering this:

Julia’s German  Stammtisch not only sports a swank new look but now offers several excellent German beers on tap! Today I enjoyed a Warsteiner lager and a Franziskaner Hefe-Weisbier Dunkel. This was their opening day and the  lunch hours so I may have well had the first if not one of the first sips out of the keg!

There’s the bastard in all its foamy glory.

So if you are ever near the Midlands and need something that sticks to your ribs look up Julia’s German Stammtisch.

You may even run into a certain goateed fop having jam sessions and brews with the music loving restauranteur!
